Antique Print, French Literature Print - Wood Engraving, Molière, "Le Mariage Forcé"  1892 Romance Fiction (AR-A405)

This print depicts a dialogue between two characters, Sganarelle and Pancrace, from a play by Molière, specifically "Le Mariage Forcé". Sganarelle is trying to get Pancrace's attention, complaining that Pancrace doesn't listen. Pancrace apologizes, claiming he was carried away by "righteous wrath." When Sganarelle tries to talk, Pancrace asks what language he will use. Sganarelle is confused, and Pancrace clarifies that one ear is for scientific languages and the other for his mother tongue. This scene is a humorous exchange highlighting the absurdity of the characters' interactions.

Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.

This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
