This print depicts Louise de La Vallière entering a Carmelite convent. 
Louise de La Vallière (1644-1710) was a French noblewoman and mistress of King Louis XIV. 
She had five children with the King. 
In 1667, she was replaced as the King's favorite by Madame de Montespan. 
In 1674, she entered the Carmelite convent and lived a penitent life until her death. 
She took the name Sister Louise of Mercy. 

Louise is a character in Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Vicomte de Bragelonne."

Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.

This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
