This print is "Mrs Gamp, From Charles Dickens A Gossip" by Frederick Barnard. It features the character of Mrs. Sarah Gamp from Charles Dickens' novel Martin Chuzzlewit.
The illustration depicts Mrs. Gamp, a disreputable nurse and midwife known for her distinctive speech, heavy drinking habits, and imaginary friend, Mrs. Harris. Barnard's illustration captures her characteristic features as described by Dickens, including her round face, swollen nose, rusty black gown, oversized bonnet, and ever-present umbrella, which became so associated with her that "gamp" became a colloquial term for an umbrella in Britain.
She is shown seated comfortably in a chair, by a fireplace, with a bottle on the mantelpiece and her umbrella nearby. This setting reflects her preference for comfort and access to her "cordial".
Frederick Barnard was a prominent English illustrator of the 19th century, known for his detailed and expressive depictions of Dickensian characters.
Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.
This is an original, not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
