Antique Print, Ianthe, Pretty Lady at a Dressing Table, Thomas Moore's "The Summer Fete, 1892 Lithograph (AR-A399)
This is one of my favorite renditions of Lady Godiva.
It depicts Lady Godiva preparing for her legendary ride. She is partially draped, shown in a moment of contemplation or resolve as she prepares to ride through Coventry. Her long hair is visible, which, according to the legend, she used to cover herself during the ride. She appears to be emerging from a grand architectural archway.
My favorite part....
In the distance, a horse is visible, awaiting her, emphasizing her impending journey. He's asking her, are you sure about this? This print is based after a painting by Jozef Van Lerius, engraved by Thomas Lewis Atkinson. The print captures a pivotal moment from the 11th-century legend of Lady Godiva, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who rode unclothed through the streets of Coventry to protest her husband's oppressive taxes.
Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.
This is an original, not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
