This antique print is titled "Augustina, The Maid of Saragossa" and is an engraving based on the 1828 painting The Defence of Saragossa by Sir David Wilkie.
Subject: The artwork depicts a scene from the 1808 Siege of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War. It shows Agustina de Aragón, a Spanish heroine, stepping over the bodies of fallen soldiers to fire a cannon at the invading French forces.
Artist: The original oil painting was created by the British artist Sir David Wilkie.

Byron's "Childe Harold"
The excerpt in the image is from Lord Byron's narrative poem, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, published between 1812 and 1818. The poem recounts the travels of a young man and was influenced by the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Byron's work features Agustina as a symbol of heroism and patriotism.

Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.

This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.

Approx Size - 11.5"x 9"

Great for framing, assemblage, collage art, scrapbooking, college or school reports, research, home decor
