Antique Print, Longfellow, Gabriel and Evangeline, 1892 Lithograph (AR-A392)

 

This is an antique etching of a painting, titled "Gabriel and Evangeline" by Frank Dicksee. It depicts a poignant scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. The artwork captures the emotional reunion of the long-separated lovers, Evangeline and Gabriel, as Evangeline, working as a Sister of Mercy, finds Gabriel among the dying during an epidemic in Philadelphia. He dies in her arms after their brief recognition. Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.This is an original, not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.Condition - This piece has some water stains.
