This is an antique print titled "Reineke Fox to be Hung". It is an illustration created by Wilhelm von Kaulbach for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 18th-century adaptation of the medieval beast epic, "Reineke Fuchs" (Reynard the Fox). 
Artwork Details: The print is a "typogravure", taken from a book, and it dates back to around 1892, with Goethe's poem being published in 1794.
The Story of Reynard the Fox: "Reineke Fuchs" is a satirical allegorical poem featuring anthropomorphic animals. It centers on the cunning and deceitful fox, Reynard, who constantly outwits other animals, including the lion King Nobel and his arch-enemy, the wolf Isegrim.
 The illustration depicts a dramatic moment where Reynard the Fox is seemingly brought to justice and is about to be hanged. However, in the various tales, Reynard often uses his cleverness and manipulative skills to escape punishment, even when facing dire consequences.
Wilhelm von Kaulbach's Illustrations: Kaulbach's illustrations for Goethe's "Reineke Fuchs" are well-known and contribute significantly to the visual legacy of this classic tale. His style often includes elements of Romanticism and intricate details in his portrayal of the animal characters and their human-like interactions.
Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.
This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
