Antique Print - Steel Engraving, Lady Bountiful, 1892 Book Page (AR-A547)

This print is titled "Lady Bountiful" and is based on a work by Scottish artist Robert Walker Macbeth (1848–1910).

The etching prominently features a well-dressed woman, identified as "Lady Bountiful," walking through a snow-covered street. She is attired in warm, fur-trimmed, winter clothing and carries an open umbrella, despite the snow, suggesting its use for shelter from falling snow or to signify her status. The scene is set in what appears to be a rural or semi-urban environment during winter, characterized by snow on the ground and quaint, possibly rustic, buildings lining the path.

"Lady Bountiful" is a character from George Farquhar's 1707 play "The Beaux' Stratagem," known for her kindness and generosity. The etching depicts a moment related to her benevolent actions within the play's narrative, perhaps bringing aid to the less fortunate in harsh winter conditions.

Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.

This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
