Antique Print - Steel Engraving, Longfellow's Evangeline, Farming Art, Cattle, 1892 Book Page (AR-A544)

 

This print depicts a scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie," specifically illustrating Evangeline as a milkmaid or herding cattle. 

Evangeline, is shown in a pastoral setting, wearing traditional attire, including a bonnet and a long dress. She is accompanied by a small herd of cows, one of which, described as her "beautiful heifer," is prominently featured in the foreground, wearing a bell and a ribbon. The setting is rural, tranquil environment, depicting a moment of herding or tending to the livestock, reflecting the simple, agrarian life of the Acadians before their expulsion. 

Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.

This is an original,  not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
