Antique Print, The Trumpeter, Opera Art, Viktor Nessler, 1892 Lithograph (AR-A531)
This antique print depicts Werner the Trumpeter and Margaret von Säckingen, characters from Viktor Nessler's opera "Der Trompeter von Säckingen".
The image features three main figures: Werner the Trumpeter, identifiable by his attire and a hat with a plume; Margaret von Säckingen, seated and dressed in a flowing gown; and an older man, likely Margaret's father, the Baron of Schönau, seated at a table.
The scene takes place indoors, in a noble residence, suggested by the ornate architecture, patterned walls, and furniture. A large window or doorway in the background offers a view of a castle or grand building in a mountainous landscape.
Werner appears to be addressing the seated figures, in a moment of narrative significance from the opera, which tells a love story set in 17th-century Germany.
Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene.
This is an original, not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
