Antique Print, Wood Engraving, Sir Walter Scott, Guy Mannering, 1892 Book Page (AR-A345)
This is an antique engraving titled "Dirk Hatteraick and Meg Merrilies," based on a painting by John Blake MacDonald and engraved by Robert Charles Bell in 1866. The scene depicts a dramatic encounter within a cave setting.
On the left, a man identified as Dirk Hatteraick sits on a barrel, appearing weary or apprehensive. On the right, a woman, Meg Merrilies, stands tall and commanding, pointing emphatically towards him with an outstretched arm.
The scene unfolds within a dark, cavernous space, suggested by the rough rock walls and ceiling. Barrels and other items are scattered around, indicating a hidden or illicit lair.
In the background, several other figures are partially visible, observing the confrontation, adding to the tension of the scene.
The use of black and white in the engraving, combined with the dramatic poses and expressions of the figures, creates a somber and intense atmosphere, depicting a pivotal moment from Sir Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering.
Also included is the tissue paper covering with a brief description of the scene. This is an original, not a reproduction. It came from a destroyed 1st edition book published in 1892 by Selmar Hess called Character Sketches of Romance Fiction and Drama. There is some damage, aging to the bound side of the print. All prints are either wood engravings, etchings, photogravure, or typogravure.
