This haunting painting by Stephen Bagnell (1930-1996) is full of intricate details. It has layers and layers of color and strokes that comprise this man's face. I believe it is an oil painting. 
 
I found information a year ago about this artist in a forum. It was said that he spent some time down the Jersey Shore in the 1960s/70s. I believe he does have family remaining who follow his works.
 
I do not know the date this piece was made, nor do I know the TITLE. 
 
I call it "Haunted Merlin" It makes me think of the moment in Arthurian Ledgend, when Merlin watched King Arthur and Mordred Slay each other.

Condition - It is very dark but the white hairs pop out at you. There is a large crease at the bottom that looks like it was folded. Other than these mentioned. 
 
I do not see anything major. (I am not an art dealer, nor an expert) The frame has dings and bumps. 
 
The backing is a piece of corrugated cardboard. I have not tried to remove it.
