Old Print, Idealized Portrait of a Lady, Simonetta Vespucci," by Sandro Botticelli (AR-A313)

This is a book page depicting the "Idealized Portrait of a Lady, Simonetta Vespucci," a painting by Sandro Botticelli.

The woman depicted is Simonetta Vespucci, a renowned beauty of Renaissance Florence. The original painting was created by the Italian artist Sandro Botticelli between 1475 and 1480, during the Early Renaissance period. The portrait features a bust-length profile of the woman, looking to the left, with a dark wall behind her and a window revealing a blue sky. She is characterized by pale skin, blue eyes, and an elaborate, fanciful hairstyle adorned with pearls and black ribbons. She wears a red dress with slit sleeves, revealing a white undergarment. The painting is considered an idealized depiction, possibly elevating her to the status of a goddess, and includes details like a medallion featuring the Greek god Apollo, which may hold symbolic meaning.

On the other side of the paper is another work of art by Sandro Botticelli's painting titled "Venus and Mars" (also known as "Mars and Venus"), created around 1485. The print showcases the Roman gods Venus, goddess of love, and Mars, god of war, in an allegorical scene representing the triumph of love over war. Venus is shown awake and watchful, reclining on the left side of the composition, while Mars is depicted asleep and vulnerable on the right, presumably after their encounter.  The scene includes playful baby satyrs (or fauns) interacting with Mars's discarded armor and weapons, symbolizing the disarming power of love. One satyr is attempting to rouse Mars by blowing a conch shell in his ear. The figures are situated in a grove of myrtle trees, which are associated with Venus and symbolize love and fertility, creating a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. This work is a notable example of Botticelli's mythological paintings from the Early Renaissance, blending classical themes with the emerging humanist ideas of the time. The original painting is housed in the National Gallery in London.

Condition - The page has some foxing but would look great once framed. It came from an old book. There is a rough edge where it was ripped from the binding.
