****This print depicts a scene from H. Rider Haggard's 1888 novel, Mr. Meeson's Will. The novel's central and most unusual plot point revolves around a will that is tattooed onto the back of the main character, Augusta Smithers.

The story features Augusta Smithers, a young author exploited by the greedy publisher Mr. Meeson, and Mr. Meeson himself, along with his sympathetic nephew, Eustace.

Augusta and Mr. Meeson end up shipwrecked on a deserted island after a collision at sea. Before his death, the dying Mr. Meeson, wishing to leave his fortune to his disinherited nephew Eustace, has his will tattooed onto Augusta's back as a means to ensure his wishes are carried out.

The illustration "Augusta in Court" depicts the dramatic and highly improbable scene where Augusta is compelled to present this unique will as evidence in a court of law to allow Eustace to claim his inheritance. This legal battle forms a significant part of the novel's latter half.

Approx Size - 11.5"x 9"
