Vintage Needlepoint, Hopi Mongwa, Great Horned Owl Kachina, Pueblo, Southwest Art, Native American Mythology (C065)
This is an absolutely beautiful piece of art. This needlepoint is signed and dated 1984. I cannot read the name. I was drawn to it the moment I found it in a thrift store. I believe Mongwa is a Hopi Deity. A kind of morph of a great horned owl and a man. I believe he was a character that the Hopi would dress as for dancing rituals in the hope of a productive crop.
I’d love to know more about the mythology of this person/deity. If you have info to add or correct, I’d love to hear from you.
