Vintage Print, Blackberries "il Rovo" from the book A Voi Bimbi by Edoardo Gioja (AR-A731)
This print comes from an Italian Children's book from 1911 called A Voi Bimbi. It is a collection of color prints depicting critters and plants.
The print depicts a branch of a blackberry plant with ripe and unripe berries. The leaves are a mix of green and yellow, indicating the season is likely late summer or early fall. The style is botanical, focusing on detail and accuracy of the plant's features. The signature at the bottom reads "Edoardo Gioja Roma 1910". The painting is likely a study of the Rubus fruticosus species, the common European blackberry.
The style is reminiscent of botanical illustrations used for scientific purposes, highlighting the plant's structure, leaves, and fruit at different stages of development. The artwork captures the natural beauty of the blackberry plant, showcasing its intricate details and natural color variations.
1 - The Bramble
How many times in the countryside, walking along the paths flanked by hedges, have we not seen beautiful brambles laden with blackberries? Last night, a beneficial rain removed all the dust that the wind of so many days had carried on them, so the blackberries, clean and fresh as you see them now, can easily be picked and eaten. But we take care to pick only the blackest ones that are ripe, because the red ones are still unripe and we will leave them on the plant to ripen for others who will come to eat them after us. Look how many thorns the bramble branches have and how they are all turned downwards. This position helps the branches to climb on adjacent plants. Once the first thorns are fixed on a plant, a wall or other support, the branch continues to grow and push upwards. But when a branch, lacking support because it has been knocked down by the wind or has fallen back due to excessive length, curves and touches the ground, then at that point it puts out new roots that make new branches sprout, and in this way the plant multiplies and extends more and more.Approx Size - 11x9
